Court allows bail to Journalist Siddiqui Kappan booked under UAPA

Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan - who was booked by the Uttar Pradesh goverment under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) after being arrested while on his way to cover the Hathras gangrape in 2020 - has been released from jail after he was granted bail. “I have come out of jail after 28 months. I want to thank the media for supporting me. False allegations were put against me. I am happy to be out now,” the journalist was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. A sessions court in Lucknow signed the release orders for Kappan's bail case. He was earlier granted bail in the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) case by the Allahabad high court. Bombay Lawyers Association, a voluntary body, filed a public interest litigation (PIL) before the Bombay high court on Wednesday seeking directions to declare that the Vice-President of India, Jagdeep Dhankar, and union law minister Kiren Rijiju are "disqualified from holding" their constitutional posts "by showing lack of faith in the Constitution of India by their conduct and utterances made in public". Protection under Domestic Violence Act not available to Husband: High Court

The High Court of Delhi has said that the protection under Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 is not available to a husband or male member of the family, in view of sections 2(a) of the statute. Section 2(a) defines an “aggrieved person” as any woman who is, or has been, in a domestic relationship with the “respondent” & alleges to have been subjected to any act of domestic violence. The Supreme Court has opined that all courts in the country need to have hybrid system of hearings in place so as anyone from anywhere can appear before it. A Bench of Justice SK Kaul and Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka expressed, orally that there needs to be a mandate to courts to put in place the facility. In a significant decision, the Supreme Court has directed all courts and judicial forums to frame guidelines to ensure that amounts deposited with the office or registry of the Courts or Tribunals are mandatorily deposited in a bank or financial institution.
